Croats are shocked by prices of first cherries: ‘Are they made of gold?’

High Cherries Prices Spark Consumer Concern in Croatia

Currently, imported cherries are the primary option available at Croatian markets, with domestic cherries anticipated to arrive in greater volumes by the end of May. Growers and sellers are observing significant consumer concern regarding the current prices of cherries. Reports from Net.hr indicate that cherries are being sold at roadside stands, with prices reaching up to 20 euros per kilogram.

This has prompted criticism from shoppers who feel the prices are disproportionately high. “Prices are not excessive, but they are completely unreasonable,” stated Davor from Zagreb. “It’s unacceptable to pay five euros for half a kilo of cherries, or 20 euros for a kilo.” Similar sentiments were expressed by Ela, who described the prices as “absurd” for the average consumer.

Robert Hadžić, a cherry cultivator with decades of experience, anticipates a more reasonable market price for domestically grown cherries this year. He projects selling his cherries for approximately 7 to 8 euros per kilogram, representing a significant reduction. The discussion surrounding these high prices highlights a perceived disconnect between the cost of cherries and the standard of living for Croatian citizens.

The expectation is that increased domestic supply will eventually alleviate concerns about the current levels of prices.

  1. “These cherry prices are unbelievable – it seems like no one can afford to enjoy a summer treat.”
