Israeli Officials Urge Continued Action in Southern Lebanon
Two senior members of the European Parliament have voiced support for the ongoing Israeli operation in southern Lebanon, emphasizing the need to dismantle Hezbollah while mitigating civilian impact. Gideon Sa’ar, an Israeli member, reiterated the government’s stated objective of destroying Hezbollah, asserting that “Israel has no territorial ambitions in Lebanon.”
Joining Sa’ar’s position is Johann Wadephul, a German MEP. Wadephul described the Israeli invasion as “urgent,” highlighting the potential for widespread devastation and the disproportionate impact on the Lebanese population.
He cautioned against allowing Lebanon to become a “war zone where civilians pay the price,” noting the suffering of young people displaced from their homes. Wadephul strongly condemned Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel, stating that “the younger generation growing up amid the ruins of their parents’ homes” will not make Israel safer. Despite these concerns, Wadephul expressed “hope” regarding direct talks between Israel and the Lebanese government, believing it represents a crucial step forward.
Currently, Israel is facilitating the return of residents to twelve Lebanese villages following the operation. The situation remains complex, with ongoing efforts to stabilize the region and address the immediate humanitarian needs within Lebanon.
