Silent Threat: Occupational Cancer Emerges Years After Exposure
Occupational cancer frequently develops gradually, often without noticeable symptoms or clear warning signs. The consequences of exposure typically manifest years, or even decades, after the initial risk. A range of hazards can contribute to this type of cancer, including substances like asbestos, quartz dust, industrial solvents, wood dust, and UV radiation.
These dangers can originate from sources not immediately apparent to the worker. According to Metoda Dodič Fikfak, Head of the Department of Occupational Medicine, Transport and Sports at the Ljubljana Clinical Centre, legal protections exist to safeguard workers. She stated during a TV appearance on Channel A’s “Svet” program that employees possess the right to be informed about potential exposures.
“The employer has a legal obligation to disclose these risks,” she explained. Furthermore, Dodič Fikfak emphasized the role of various support systems. Workers should receive information from trade unions, worker representatives, safety engineers, and occupational medicine specialists.
The goal is to ensure that the risk of occupational cancer is identified and communicated effectively, allowing for appropriate preventative measures. This highlights the importance of proactive measures in preventing this type of cancer.
