A search team has successfully located the wreckage of a plane that crashed off the coast of Puerto Rico approximately 74 years ago, according to reports. The accident, which resulted in 52 fatalities, prompted significant and lasting safety measures within the aviation industry. The wreckage was discovered on June 2nd at a depth of about 610 meters in the Atlantic Ocean.
The Air/Sea Heritage Foundation (ASHF), which led the search efforts, reported on Tuesday that the plane’s remains were found split in two. The discovery was made utilizing high-resolution sonar technology and an autonomous underwater vehicle. ASHF, under the leadership of President Russ Matthews, initiated the search for the “missing” aircraft seven years ago.
The investigation process began with a review of historical accident reports and subsequent physical investigations conducted off the coast of San Juan. These efforts eventually led to a collaboration with researcher Josh Gates. The recovery of this wreckage marks a significant milestone in the decades-long effort to locate the remains of the aircraft.
