Without transplantation, she would only have a year or two left to live

Crown Princess Haakon of Norway is currently awaiting a lung transplant due to chronic pulmonary fibrosis, an irreversible condition characterized by the scarring and hardening of lung tissue. The disease progressively impairs breathing, diminishes physical capabilities, and leads to a decline in overall lung function. According to a statement from the Norwegian royal court, Mette-Marit Haakon is on the waiting list for a suitable lung donor.

The transplant procedure will proceed once an appropriate organ becomes available. Individuals considered for lung transplants are identified as some of the most severely affected patients. Transplant operations in Norway are exclusively conducted at the Rikshospitalet University Hospital in Oslo, where approximately 30 procedures are carried out annually.

This number remains relatively low, largely attributed to the scarcity of available donors. Strict criteria must be met for a patient to be considered for inclusion on the waiting list. Only patients with the most advanced stages of lung disease are evaluated, reflecting the complex and demanding nature of the procedure.

Doctors emphasize that not all individuals with lung conditions are eligible for this treatment option.
