The Slovenian parliament passed a strategic plan for the Armed Forces extending to 2040 in June of the previous year. This resolution outlined a significant rise in defense spending, aiming for 2% of the gross domestic product (gdp) by 2025. Subsequent increases were scheduled, reaching 2.2% of gdp by 2026 and 2.4% by 2027.

By 2030, the allocated defense expenditures were projected to constitute 3% of the gdp, representing a substantial investment exceeding two billion euros. The left-leaning party raised concerns, asserting that a comprehensive public discussion regarding these increased defense expenditures hadn’t occurred. This prompted a proposal for a consultation referendum, supported by the coalition party SD, alongside the opposition parties NSi and SDS.

Following this, the Freedom Movement announced their intention to also advocate for a consultation process. The overall strategy focused on bolstering the nation’s defense capabilities through increased budgetary allocations.
