Companies warn about the burden of mandatory Christmas leave, unions defend workers

Slovenian companies seek voluntary winter compensation amid economic challenges

The standard winter compensation or Christmas bonus, amounting to €638.86, was distributed to Slovenian companies and employees in December of last year. However, the Organization of Slovenian Self-Help (OZS) is working to transition this payment into a voluntary offering, acknowledging the importance of recognizing employee contributions. The move stems from financial pressures faced by many Slovenian companies, particularly those outside the public sector and those operating with negative balances.

“Not in the public sector due to budget depletion and not in companies with negative balance, they just cannot afford it,” explained Blaž Cvar, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia. Cvar emphasized that the Chamber recognizes the value of rewarding employees for their work. He countered criticisms suggesting struggling companies should close, highlighting that such measures would impact approximately 70,000 jobs.

The Chamber of Commerce also asserted that it is inappropriate for the state to prescribe this type of bonus payment to companies experiencing business difficulties. The goal is to provide support without imposing a legally required obligation. The situation reflects ongoing challenges for many Slovenian companies and the need for sustainable economic solutions.

  1. “It’s concerning to see businesses struggling with the cost of offering Christmas bonuses while workers deserve recognition for their efforts.”
