Trump is thinking about withdrawing the US from NATO

Trump is seriously contemplating a withdrawal from the defense pact, citing long-held doubts about NATO’s credibility. He communicated this perspective to the Telegraph, stating, “Oh, yes, I would say that it’s more than just a matter of reconsideration… I have always known that it’s just a ‘paper tiger’ and that’s what Russian President Vladimir Putin knows.”

The statement reflects Trump’s longstanding view of NATO. Other prominent officials have also suggested the possibility of the US leaving the alliance, though the weight of these suggestions remains uncertain.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated a need to “rethink” Washington’s relationship with NATO following the conclusion of the war in Iraq. Rubio emphasized, “If NATO is just that, to defend Europe to us, if this attack is happening, and at the same time we are denied rights, then that’s just a ‘paper tiger’”. Essentially, Trump believes NATO is a “paper tiger,” a concept he has consistently expressed.

The situation highlights a significant debate regarding the future of US involvement within the alliance.
