80 percent of pork imported? UVHVVR: These analyses are not conclusive proof

The Novo mesto Agricultural and Forestry Institute, alongside the Institute of Jožef Stefan (IJS) and other organizations, recently revealed concerning findings regarding pork sales. A survey, as reported by Dnevnik last week, indicates that a staggering 79% of pork marketed as Slovenian is, in fact, imported. This raises a serious question: what does this signify for consumers and the state of Slovenian pig farming?

The data suggests that nearly 80% of pork samples bearing the “Slovenian origin” label likely originate from abroad, representing a notable issue within the market. While one project’s results don’t allow for definitive conclusions about the entire pig meat market, the survey’s outcome is undeniably clear and significant, according to the Chamber of Agriculture of Slovenia (KGZS). “Although this is a limited analysis – encompassing only 19 samples – the results are remarkably clear and important,” explained the KKGZS.

This situation highlights what needs to be addressed regarding the labeling and sourcing of pork. It’s crucial to understand what this means for consumers and the future of Slovenian pig farming.
