Infectologist Shares Experience with Lyme Disease Diagnosis
Infectologist David Zupančič recently shared his experience with a Lyme disease diagnosis, emphasizing the importance of recognizing early symptoms. Zupančič, a noted nature enthusiast, frequently visits Golovec, a local mountain, and admits to occasionally lying on the grass during outdoor activities. “I go to Golovec a lot, and I lie down on the grass sometimes when we play, so there’s no secret about whether I got a tick or not,” he stated.
He detailed that he is unsure of when he was bitten, nor did he observe the typical early signs of Lyme disease, including a prominent skin rash. “I got a little bit itchy on my back, but you can’t see it on the shoulder blade, so my wife noticed it once. Then, when she took a picture, I immediately put the diagnosis on it.”
Zupančič explained that in many cases, blood testing is not immediately required.
He typically initiates antibiotic treatment based on suspicion, and often experiences a rapid improvement in his condition. “You just start taking antibiotics and feel perfectly fine,” he added. However, he stressed a critical concern: “The problem is when people miss the spot or don’t react to it.”
He noted that the characteristic skin fold associated with the illness “also disappears without treatment in about two weeks.” He emphasized the need for vigilance and prompt action in suspected cases.
