The previous warmest May day on the Island reached 32.8 degrees Celsius, first in 1922 and then in 1944. The record-breaking warm May day is not only today, but also last night, when 19.4 degrees Celsius was recorded in London. A yellow warning for high temperatures for most of England is valid until Wednesday.
The level of ultraviolet radiation is also unusually high. Due to increased demand in the counties of Kent and Sussex, there are no water supplies or water shortages on around 500 farms, the authorities have reported. Meanwhile, on the Scottish Highlands it is cloudy and raining.
British weather forecasters have predicted temperatures of up to 35 degrees Celsius for today, after a heat wave had spread to parts of southeast England and London on Sunday evening.
