Under the terms, American companies will be involved in the construction of nuclear power facilities located within Saudi territory. A critical element distinguishing this current agreement is the provision regarding uranium enrichment. It includes the potential for Saudi Arabia to enrich uranium for the fuel required by its nuclear reactors.
This capability represents a significant divergence from the 2009 agreement signed by the US with the United Arab Emirates, which did not involve the enrichment of uranium, partly due to the nations’ lack of domestic uranium reserves. Overall, the accord significantly advances the strategic energy relationship between the two nations.
