Starmer does not want to resign, four ministers have left. Will there be more resignations?

Labour Party Leader Keir Starmer affirmed today that he will not resign, despite increasing calls for his departure. Speaking during a cabinet meeting, Starmer stated that the Labour Party had not initiated any process to remove the leader. The announcement follows a series of ministerial resignations within the party.

Miatta Fahnbulleh, Minister for Housing, was the first government member to step down. In a letter of resignation published on social network X, Fahnbulleh urged Starmer to establish a timetable for a smooth leadership transition, allowing a new team to enact the party’s policy pledges. Fahnbulleh, a close associate of Energy Minister Ed Miliband, according to reports from the AFP, requested a defined timeframe for the change.

Miliband is understood to have previously held a significant role within the Labour Party. Starmer’s firm stance comes amid considerable internal pressure. The party remains focused on delivering on its stated commitments, and the leadership transition is currently not underway.

  1. “It’s deeply concerning to see such instability within the Labour Party and whether it signals a larger crisis.”
