Greek Coast Guard Transfers Drone to Army Following Discovery
The Greek coast guard announced Friday the handover of a recovered drone to the Greek army. Following the transfer, retired vice admiral Stelios Fenekos commented on the discovery, stating its similarities to Ukrainian military drones. Newsit reported that the drone was found by fishermen on Thursday and brought to the nearest port.
Notably, the drone’s motor was operational at the time of discovery. Fenekos indicated that the recovered drone possessed characteristics consistent with a military-grade device. He identified the drone’s design as resembling Ukrainian-made Magura drones, which have been utilized by Ukraine in naval operations.
Ukraine has previously deployed autonomous vessels, including water drones, to target Russian naval assets. In December 2023, Ukrainian authorities announced a successful strike against the Qendil tanker, a vessel associated with the Russian “shadow fleet,” resulting in significant damage. The incident highlights the ongoing strategic use of unmanned systems in maritime conflicts.
The Greek military’s investigation into the drone’s origin and purpose is ongoing.
