Slovenian doctors in Africa: Zambia’s pulse through a stethoscope

Six young medical students and dentists – Anamarija, Adriana, Nina, Hana, and Tim – recently completed a three-month mission to Nangoma, Zambia, where they assisted staff at a modest missionary hospital. The group traveled just one year prior with the goal of bolstering the hospital’s depleted resources. During their time in Nangoma, Adriana Mediževec, one of the young doctors, described their involvement, noting that she and her colleagues frequently took over responsibilities in the operating rooms and during surgical procedures, including assisting with cesarean sections and births.

They also dedicated significant time to the hospital’s dental clinic. Prior to the trip, the students organized fundraising efforts to provide essential supplies, including medications, dressings, ultrasound equipment, and electrocardiogram machines, which were then utilized in the more remote areas they served. Their work included implementing vaccination and preventative health programs.

The experience in a third-world setting significantly impacted the students, fostering adaptability and a heightened sense of gratitude. They encountered challenges with limited electricity and device functionality, and diagnostic resources were scarce.
