EU Workers Reported an Average of 35.9 Hours Worked Per Week in 2023
Recent data released by Eurostat reveals the average number of hours worked by full-time and part-time employees aged 20 to 64 across the European Union in 2023. The overall average was 35.9 hours per week in the main job, a decrease from 36.9 hours recorded in 2015. The data highlights significant variations across EU member states.
Greece recorded the longest average weekly working hours at 39.6 hours, followed closely by Bulgaria (38.7 hours), Poland (38.7 hours), Lithuania (38.4 hours), and Slovenia (38.3 hours). Notably, the average working day in Slovenia has decreased by 0.7 hours compared to 2015. The trend of lower average hours worked is largely concentrated within southern, central, and eastern European nations.
Conversely, countries in the developed western and northern European regions generally exhibited average or above-average hours worked. This reflects a continuing pattern observed in the data, with the average hours worked remaining a key indicator of labor market dynamics across the European Union.
