Swimmers along the Slovenian coast have recently observed numerous instances of strikingly beautiful jellyfish in the sea. Andreja Ramšak, from the Marine Biological Station of the National Institute of Biology, identified the species as Cotylorhiza tuberculata, commonly known as sea cauliflower. Ramšak described the jellyfish’s distinct appearance, noting a brownish circle above and a dark green symbiont beneath the umbrella, along with cauliflower-like mouth arms featuring blue growths.
According to Ramšak, the jellyfish pose no threat to swimmers, as they contain minimal toxins and do not cause skin irritation. The presence of sea cauliflower has been documented in the Slovenian sea for the past two decades. Biologists have been consistently monitoring these sightings and have drawn a correlation between the increased observations and broader environmental changes, specifically linking them to climate change and rising sea temperatures.
The continuous monitoring of these marine organisms provides ongoing data regarding the ecological shifts occurring in the region’s coastal waters.
