The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is reportedly examining Ryanair’s practice of requiring parents to pay approximately 8 pounds (9.27 euros) for a seat with their child, even though the carrier’s terms state that children aged between two and 11 must sit with at least one parent. The regulator is checking whether this is an unfair contractual condition under UK consumer law. The CMA is also focusing on the possible use of so-called “drip pricing”, where the additional costs are only revealed towards the end of the purchase process.
Such practice is illegal in the UK, as companies must clearly show consumers the final price with all the inevitable costs upfront.
