Roms have not been discriminated against in tax enforcement

Ombudsman Investigates Allegations of Discrimination in Tax Enforcement Targeting Roma

The Ombudsman has launched an investigation following concerns raised about potential systemic discrimination within tax enforcement proceedings targeting the Roma community. The inquiry was triggered by a complaint submitted to the Ombudsman, detailing allegations of ethnic profiling and collective punishment. The initial complaint centered on instances of vehicle seizures conducted by the Joint Financial Administration (Furs) and police control operations.

The complainant asserted that these actions disproportionately targeted members of the Roma community. According to the Ombudsman’s explanation, the complaint highlighted specific instances where individuals were subjected to these measures. The investigation is examining whether Roma individuals were treated less favorably than others in similar circumstances, and whether ethnic affiliation played a role in the implementation of these enforcement actions.

The Ombudsman’s office has received explanations from both the Furs and the Ministry of Internal Affairs. According to these explanations, both agencies acted within the scope of their established responsibilities during the relevant operations. The investigation will focus on determining whether any violations occurred in the handling of tax related matters against the Roma community.
