UK Parliament Approves Legislation Raising Tobacco and E-Cigarette Purchase Age to 20
The UK’s upper house of Parliament has approved legislation restricting the sale of tobacco and e-cigarette products to individuals under the age of 20. The new law mandates a significant increase in the legal age for purchasing these products, effectively barring an entire generation from ever acquiring cigarettes or e-cigarettes. The government argues that this measure will prevent future deaths, disabilities, and illnesses within the United Kingdom.
The legislation stipulates that the legal age for tobacco sales will incrementally rise by one year each year, beginning in 2027. Individuals born after January 1, 2009, will be unable to purchase tobacco products. Currently, the sale of tobacco products to individuals under 18 is prohibited in the United Kingdom.
Projections indicate that by 2075, the number of people who will smoke is expected to decrease by approximately 1.7 million due to the implementation of this law. The move addresses concerns regarding youth vaping and smoking rates. The legislation represents a proactive approach to public health, aiming to reduce the long-term impact of nicotine addiction within the nation.
