Norway to Invest in Ekofisk Gas Field Development
The Norwegian Ministry of Energy has announced plans to develop the Ekofisk gas field, a project expected to extend until 2048. The initiative, led by American company ConocoPhillips, represents an investment of 19 billion Norwegian crowns (approximately 1.75 billion euros). The development will focus on three fields – Albuskjell, Vest Ekofisk, and Tommeliten Gamma – located west of the existing Ekofisk field.
These fields, previously closed in 1998, hold an estimated gas reserve range of 90 to 120 million 159-liter oil equivalent barrels. Norway remains the world’s largest gas producer and the largest European gas supplier. This new development is being undertaken amid heightened concerns regarding energy security, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and geopolitical instability in the Middle East.
The project is slated to begin in 2028 and is anticipated to significantly contribute to Norway’s continued role as a key gas provider to European markets. The Ministry’s announcement highlights the nation’s commitment to bolstering its energy resources.
