A goat was recently observed wandering near Nanos, Slovenia, prompting social media attention. Caretakers at Vojkova koča, a mountain hut located in Nanos, have confirmed the sighting and reported seeing the animal on the trail leading to the summit. The initial post accompanying the photograph indicated the goat was lost.
Experts have identified the animal as a species of bird, specifically a Eurasian griffon vulture. Matija Ramšak, a caretaker at the Ljubljana Zoo, described the birds’ characteristics. Female griffon vultures are typically grayish and smaller than males, while males are distinguished by black plumage and develop red beaks and legs during maturity.
These omnivorous birds primarily consume plants, insects, grains, and small stones. According to Ramšak, they can survive extended periods without water, though they will drink if available. The sighting near Nanos remains an unusual event, with the bird’s presence adding to the area’s natural diversity.
