The Alpine Motor Club Slovenia (AMZS) conducted a safety assessment of cycling paths across five Slovenian cities – Ljubljana, Kranj, Koper, Velenje, and Novo mesto – utilizing a mobile application developed by a Spanish firm. The assessment focused on identifying potential hazards for cyclists and pedestrians sharing these routes. Over a total distance of 15 kilometers, AMZS experts documented the condition of the cycling paths using the app, which captures images and records data related to the infrastructure.
The majority of the assessed paths were categorized as having a passable or low risk level. However, a smaller portion received ratings of high or extreme risk. The findings were consistent across all five locations examined.
Despite the generally acceptable safety ratings, AMZS experts highlighted concerns regarding the infrastructure’s design. Specifically, the narrowness of the paths frequently presented challenges for safe overtaking maneuvers and interactions between cyclists and vehicles. In Ljubljana, the assessment noted a particular issue with a path featuring 45 meters in width.
The team concluded that while improvements could be made to enhance cyclist safety, the current conditions represent a need for further attention and potential modifications to the existing routes.
