The French news agency, AFP, reports that 62 Members of Parliament (MPs) voted in favor of the controversial law. This outcome included Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister. Conversely, 48 MPs opposed the legislation, while one MP chose to abstain.
A significant number of representatives were absent from the vote. The newly enacted law, backed by the most radical political factions, establishes that hanging would be the standard punishment for Palestinians residing in the occupied West Bank. Specifically, it applies to individuals convicted of deliberately committing lethal attacks, categorized as “terrorist acts.”
It’s important to note that Palestinians in the West Bank, a territory occupied by Israel since 1967, are consistently tried by military courts rather than civilian ones.
The law mandates that executions by hanging must be completed within 90 days following a judgment. However, exceptions exist; in “special circumstances,” the execution could be delayed for up to 180 days, or the sentence could be reclassified. This law directly impacts the future of palestinians.
