In Gaza’s incubator to Egypt: after two years, the little girl saw her mother for the first time

At least eight premature babies, evacuated from Gaza during the initial stages of the conflict, have successfully returned home after being treated in Egypt. These infants were part of a group of over 30 critically ill newborns, requiring intensive care in incubators, who were transported from the Shifa hospital in Gaza in November 2023. The evacuation occurred amidst intense fighting, as reported by the BBC.

Israeli forces occupied the hospital complex, asserting that it had been utilized by Hamas. The reunion marks a significant moment for the families involved. Sundus al-Kurdi, one of the mothers anxiously awaiting her daughter’s arrival on Monday, expressed the complex emotions she felt, stating she was “torn between fear and joy” regarding the potential for rejection after more than two years of separation.

Al-Kurdi was stationed at the hospital, holding a pink dress for her daughter, Bisan. She recounted the efforts to retrieve her newborn from the Shifa hospital following the cessation of the heavy fighting. Who knows what the future holds for these families, but this return represents a beacon of hope.

The babies, who were initially evacuated from Gaza, are now reunited with their relatives in Egypt.
