According to the Norwegian National Crime Agency (Kripos), an international operation has successfully identified and apprehended several individuals who utilized the cryptocurrency Monero to make payments on dark web forums. The French news agency AFP reported that the operation, which commenced in early June, involved cooperation among six different countries and received support from the European Police Office (Europol). As a direct result of the investigation, multiple men ranging in age from 22 to 54 were arrested.
The detentions took place across several nations, including Norway, Sweden, Poland, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, and Germany. Kripos, the investigating agency that developed the method for tracking cryptocurrency usage last year, indicated that the scope of the investigation is ongoing. The agency anticipates further arrests may occur, possibly in additional countries, and cautioned that the number of suspects remains high.
Furthermore, Europol issued a separate statement confirming that at least one of the arrested men is currently a person of interest in their investigation. The coordination between international law enforcement bodies underscores the complexity of tracking illicit financial activities conducted through decentralized digital currencies.
