‘First move’: Israir’s Flight Director issued a permit for flights

New Slovenian Minister Issues Permit for Israir Flights to Ljubljana

Jernej Vrtovec, the newly appointed Minister for Infrastructure and Energy, has issued a permit for Israeli carrier Israir to operate flights between Tel Aviv and Ljubljana. The decision was made shortly after Vrtovec assumed office. Previously, Israir was slated to commence service to the Slovenian capital at the end of May, but the airline had been awaiting necessary regulatory approvals.

The (former) Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy cited several factors in delaying the permit, including a government decision from July 2023 prohibiting the export and transit of military weapons and equipment from or through Slovenia to Israel, as well as the repeal of a 2003 decision allowing Israeli security officers to carry weapons at Jože Pučnik Airport, effective September 2023. Following the decision, the Ministry requested more detailed information from the Israeli air carrier. The specific details of the permit and the rationale behind its issuance are currently under review.

This development marks a significant step in potentially restoring direct air connectivity between the two destinations.
