NATO Leaders Discuss Defense Spending Ahead of Ankara Summit
Brussels – US Defense Minister Pete Hegseth and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte arrived in Brussels on Wednesday to participate in meetings ahead of the alliance’s July summit in Ankara. The discussions centered on the ongoing commitment of member states to meet the established defense spending targets. Hegseth stated upon arrival that “Many countries fulfill their commitments, some need to do more, and we will be open about this, both in private conversations and in public.
I think this is important – that friends are open to friends.” The meetings represent the final preparations for the alliance’s key summit. Specifically, Secretary General Rutte highlighted Slovenia as one NATO member currently below the two percent GDP target for defense. However, Rutte indicated that Slovenia has pledged to surpass this threshold during the current fiscal year.
Slovenian defense minister Valentin Hajdinjak also arrived in Brussels to participate in the discussions. The focus remains on bolstering collective security and ensuring consistent contributions from all NATO members towards their defense obligations. The upcoming summit in Ankara is expected to address these priorities and solidify the alliance’s strategy moving forward.
