Rob Dieperink’s involvement with the World Cup was marked by controversy. He initially began his career journey in the Dutch national championship in 2017. Leading up to this year’s World Cup, the International Football Association (FIFA) had listed him among the referees slated to work at the tournament.
At 38, Dieperink was expected to take on responsibilities involving the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system. However, in April, his participation was interrupted when he was arrested on charges of suspected sexual assault against a minor. Although the case was subsequently dismissed due to insufficient evidence, Dieperink did not participate in the World Cup.
In an interview with the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Dieperink stated that all allegations against him were unfounded. He asserted that he had maintained full cooperation with all competent authorities throughout the investigation process. The incident prompted a statement from a colleague who noted, “We have lost a very valued referee, but above all a friendly and dedicated colleague.
Our thoughts are with Rob.” Despite his prior inclusion in the officiating roster for the major world event, the legal proceedings ultimately removed him from the World Cup duties.
