A fire broke out in Italy’s Kras region, smoke reached Trieste

Despite significant efforts by firefighters, forestry services, and civil protection agencies, the fire on the Tržaško Kras intensified overnight, according to reports. The flames once again engulfed the wooded area situated between Padrič and Gropado. The incident began in the early afternoon of Saturday, August 1st.

The initial outbreak occurred near a residence east of Padrič, along the route connecting Gropado to the cemetery in the direction of Bazovica. From there, the fire spread toward the provincial road linking Padriče and Bazovica. Initial response efforts were substantial.

Numerous firefighting and rescue units from across the region were dispatched to the scene, and air support, including helicopters, was utilized. These combined efforts successfully contained the blaze, allowing authorities to save the Ieralla elderly home and several nearby residential structures. However, the situation remained dynamic as the fire continued to burn through the night.

During the nighttime phase, additional helicopter support was called in to assist the firefighting teams. Authorities continue to manage the spread of the fire, emphasizing the coordinated effort required to mitigate the damage to the sensitive ecological area of the kras. The focus remains on containing the remaining hotspots and ensuring public safety as the situation develops.
