The paradox of the MotoGP class in 2026: the higher you fall, the higher you are on the rankings

Giacomo Agostini, the most successful motorcycle racer of all time, reflected on the differences between his era and modern MotoGP. Speaking to Gazzetto dello Sport, Agostini stated that in his time, spanning the 1960s and 1970s, falling was considered unacceptable due to the high risk of serious injury. He emphasized that this was a defining characteristic of motorcycling during that period.

However, he noted a significant change today. While MotoGP now experiences numerous crashes, advancements in safety technology and racetrack design have reduced the potential consequences for riders. “Today is – fortunately – different,” Agostini said.

“The progress in safety, particularly on the circuits, has lessened the impact of falls.”
