The Artemis 2 mission brought NASA astronauts within striking distance of the Moon, achieving a significant milestone in lunar exploration. The crew, consisting of Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, spent approximately seven hours orbiting the Moon. During this flight, the astronauts approached the lunar surface, reaching a distance of just 6,500 kilometers from the Moon.
This proximity marked a considerable advancement compared to the Apollo 13 mission, which came within 407,000 kilometers of the Moon’s far side. The mission focused on observing the lunar surface, capturing approximately 10,000 photographs to document the details of the landscape. Roughly 21 percent of the Moon’s far side was illuminated by the sun during the flight, offering a unique opportunity for visual observation.
The astronauts conducted two shifts, totaling five hours, dedicated to data collection and observation. This mission represents a crucial step in NASA’s ongoing efforts to return humans to the Moon and further explore its mysteries.
