Alarming results of the test of sunscreen from online marketplaces: no sun protection

The Slovenian Consumer Association (Zveza potrošnikov Slovenije, ZPS) has released concerning findings regarding the efficacy and composition of sun protection products available on major online marketplaces. The association’s investigation suggests that a significant portion of these items fail to provide adequate UV protection, and some contain ingredients that are already prohibited by European Union regulations. As part of the comparative test, ZPS procured 17 different sun care products from the platforms Temu, Shein, and AliExpress.

All sampled items were advertised with a minimum sun protection factor (SPF) of 50 and originated from China, despite listings claiming representation from various EU countries, including Spain, France, and Germany. The detailed results of the testing revealed substantial discrepancies. Out of the 17 products ordered, only seven were deemed suitable for full inclusion in the assessment.

Five products either failed to arrive or arrived significantly past the testing deadline. Furthermore, two items were duplicates of products already included in the test sample. Most critically, three products were excluded from the evaluation because they contained UV filters that are banned substances.

These findings indicate potential risks to consumer safety when purchasing sun protection products online. The association urges consumers to exercise caution and verify the credentials and composition of any claimed sun protection before purchase.
