Austria Calls for Enhanced Border Protection Measures
Vienna – Austrian Interior Minister Hans Peter Karlner has emphasized the need for significant expansion and strengthening of the European Pact on Migration and Asylum, particularly regarding external border protection. He also highlighted the continued requirement for measures to safeguard the Austrian border region. Karlner stated that border protection strategies have undergone a restructuring, shifting towards a more adaptable approach.
“Instead of relying solely on selective, stationary border controls, we now utilize broad, flexible, and effective border controls,” he explained in a Ministry of the Interior statement released Sunday. The revised strategy’s primary objective is to disrupt the operations of human smugglers and criminal organizations, with a focus on preventing the imposition of burdens on legitimate travelers. This shift reflects Austria’s experience following the temporary border controls implemented in 2015 in response to the height of the refugee crisis, measures which were subsequently utilized.
The Ministry continues to prioritize the secure and efficient management of its borders. The goal remains to effectively protect the border while ensuring a balanced approach to migration management. The Austrian border crossing remains a focal point for ongoing security efforts.
