Man Acquitted of Rape Charges in Norway, Admits to Lesser Offenses
Oslo, Norway – Marius Hoeiby, a 29-year-old man, was acquitted of two charges of rape following a trial in Oslo’s court. Throughout the proceedings, Hoeiby maintained his innocence and denied the allegations. He subsequently admitted to related, lesser offenses, according to CNN reports.
The verdict was delivered via video link with Hoeiby absent from the courtroom. The prosecution had sought a sentence of seven years and seven months in prison for the defendant, while his legal team argued for a reduced sentence of 18 months. The court ultimately delivered a decision that differed from the prosecution’s request.
Hoeiby’s upbringing was notable, having been raised by the mother of Marius, Mette-Marit, who is a member of the Norwegian royal family. He was raised from the age of four and his godfather was Crown Prince Haakon, who would later become King. Despite his privileged upbringing within royal circles, Hoeiby does not hold an official position as a member of the royal family.
The case concluded with the acquittal, leaving the sentencing range at 18 months.
