Prime Minister vs. President: Is Hungary on the brink of a constitutional crisis?

Hungarian Prime Minister Challenges President’s Role, Demands Resignation

Budapest – Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has announced the government’s intention to utilize all legal avenues, including a potential constitutional amendment, to remove President Tamas Sulyok from office. The announcement, made to Politika, stems from concerns regarding the President’s role and alleged political connections. Magyar stated that President Sulyok is failing to uphold his constitutional duty as guardian of the rule of law and maintains ties to the prior administration.

He formally demanded Sulyok’s immediate resignation, setting a deadline of May 31st for the President’s departure. However, President Sulyok rejected the government’s pressure on Sunday, asserting that the integrity of the presidential office demands unwavering incorruptibility. He emphasized the duration of his term, which extends until 2029, following the resignation of former President Katalin Novák, who stepped down amidst a previous scandal.

The situation highlights a significant power struggle within the Hungarian government, with the Prime Minister asserting the need for a change in leadership while the President remains steadfast in his position. Negotiations and potential legal challenges are expected as the deadline approaches.
