Police Rescue Hundreds of Cats from Illegal Operation in Vietnam

Following a three-year investigation, police have successfully disrupted a network involved in the theft and potential slaughter of cats in southern Vietnam. Euronews reports that authorities apprehended nine individuals suspected of operating a group specializing in the acquisition of domestic animals. The operation, centered around Ho Chi Minh City, was initiated due to a rise in pet thefts within the region.

Investigators believe the stolen cats were intended for sale as meat, despite the prohibition on consuming cat and dog meat in Vietnam. During a raid, authorities recovered more than 400 live cats, alongside 80 deceased cats already preserved, and an additional 21 cats seized from a separate location. The suspects admitted to using treats to lure the animals and subsequently capturing them across various locations in the southern part of Vietnam.

The detained individuals are currently being held while investigations continue. Authorities have secured them and are working to determine the full extent of the operation and any potential involvement in organized crime. The rescued cats are now being provided with safe housing and care.
