150 thousand euros for journalist’s murder: Maltese tycoon on the court

Yorgen Fenech, a 44-year-old Maltese tycoon and heir to a significant real estate empire that includes the Hilton Malta hotel, recently appeared on the witness stand. He faces accusations of complicity in a premeditated murder and alleged collaboration with individuals in Malta to commit a crime. Fenech has not admitted guilt regarding the charges.

According to the prosecution, the conspiracy to commit the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia originated in the spring of 2017. Prosecutors allege that the maltese tycoon initiated contact with his acquaintance, Melvin Theuma, a taxi driver and banker. The prosecution claims Fenech instructed Theuma to locate an individual capable of carrying out the killing.

Furthermore, the allegations state that Fenech provided a specific name: George Degiorgio. The narrative continues by detailing that Theuma subsequently contacted George Degiorgio and his brother, Alfred Degiorgio. It is alleged that the three men reached an agreement involving a payment of 150,000 euros, with 30,000 euros designated for George Degiorgio.

The prosecution asserts that Alfred Degiorgio was the party who first established contact with both brothers to finalize the payment arrangement related to the crime. The proceedings focus heavily on establishing the chain of command leading up to the murder. Despite the detailed allegations presented by the state, Fenech maintains his defense, asserting his innocence throughout the judicial process.
