Sajovic: Infrastructure investments are a defensive expenditure

Slovenia reported defense expenditures totaling 2.04 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), amounting to 1.438 billion euros to NATO, according to Defense Minister Borut Sajovic. This figure includes 1 billion euros allocated to military operations, equipment procurement, ministry operations, and security system monitoring. Sajovic addressed concerns regarding a portion of the expenditure, specifically 330 million euros, which was invested in infrastructure projects.

These projects primarily focused on railway and road development. The minister stated that this allocation “raises different views,” prompting questions about its categorization within defense spending. Responding to suggestions that Slovenia’s reported defense expenditures did not encompass infrastructure investments, Sajovic clarified his position.

“As a defense minister and as a member of the government, I understand that everything we have invested in infrastructure also goes into the defense expenditures,” he explained. The minister’s comments aim to provide context surrounding the overall defense budget and highlight the government’s strategic investments. The reported figures represent Slovenia’s contribution to NATO’s collective defense efforts, with a significant portion dedicated to both military readiness and bolstering national infrastructure.
