The last Portuguese circus elephant is moving to a bear sanctuary

Circus Elephant to Move to Portuguese Sanctuary Following Animal Welfare Ban

Julie, a 40-year-old performer originally from South Africa, joined the Victor Hugo Cardinali circus in 1988 and ceased performing in 2024. This shift follows the implementation of a ban on the use of wild animals in circuses across Portugal. The circus has reached an agreement to relocate a second African elephant to the Pangea Trust sanctuary in Alentejo, southern Portugal.

The elephant originates from the Belgian zoo managed by the British Pangea Trust. The move was facilitated through a voluntary agreement, according to a joint statement from the Victor Hugo Cardinali circus and the Pangea Trust. The statement emphasized a shared commitment to Julie’s welfare.

Kate Moore, CEO of the Pangea Trust, indicated that estimates suggest over 600 elephants reside in circuses and zoos throughout Europe. She noted that many of these animals may require alternative housing options. The relocation represents a significant step in addressing concerns surrounding animal welfare within the European circus industry following the Portuguese ban.

Further details regarding the transfer process are pending.
