According to Toni Smolej, head of the GRS Radovljica, the first incident involved a 75-year-old man in a wooded area. The individual sustained a bite after grabbing a snake while attempting to retrieve a branch.
Rescuers provided initial treatment at a local cabin before transferring the patient via helicopter to a specialized treatment facility in Ljubljana. The following day brought a second set of emergency calls. Rescuers were notified that a young, foreign mountaineer, accompanied by a colleague, had been bitten by a snake.
Smolej noted the concern regarding the victim’s ability to walk after the bite occurred. Both individuals had continued their hike and only sought assistance approximately 45 minutes after the incident. These recorded cases highlight critical safety concerns in the wilderness.
