The comprehensive census of white storks in Slovenia has been conducted using internationally accepted methodologies since 1999. Annually, between late June and early July, census teams visit all known nesting sites across the country to assess occupancy rates and nesting success. This year, the teams inspected a total of 461 nests.
A crucial component of the census process involves engaging with local residents, who provide valuable annual data regarding nesting progress, observed territorial disputes, arrival patterns, and other relevant ecological information. Furthermore, census staff conduct detailed examinations of the nests to determine their structural stability and safety. Data tracking shows a consistent upward trend in the population over recent years.
In 2023, the DOPPS recorded 305 occupied nests. The current census recorded 346 occupied nests, indicating a significant increase in documented nesting activity over the past three-year period. The meticulous nature of this annual survey provides vital ecological data for conservation efforts.
The sustained monitoring of these breeding pairs is essential for understanding the long-term viability of the species within Slovenia’s habitats. The continuity of this census allows researchers to adapt conservation strategies based on current population metrics, ensuring the protection of the species and their critical nesting grounds.
