Dr. Ivo Bebler was born on March 10, 1937, in Moscow. He is the son of a Yugoslav political émigré.
Bebler’s academic career began with studies in Slavic languages in Belgrade, followed by advanced studies at graduate schools in the United States, France, Great Britain, and Serbia. He earned his doctorate in political science and international relations from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. From 1972, Bebler was employed at the Ljubljana Faculty of Social Sciences.
He served as the first dean of the defense studies program and subsequently held the positions of dean and full professor at the university. He achieved the rank of full professor at the University of Ljubljana. In 1992, Bebler was appointed as a permanent representative – ambassador – to the United Nations Office in Geneva and to other international organizations located in Switzerland.
Throughout his career, he also served as president of the Atlantic Council of Slovenia, the Slovenian Exile Association, and several other organizations.
