Umek as host of POPcasts: first guest was Jani Novak from Laibach

Umek’s “Not Incompatible” Series Focuses on Collaborative Friendships

Popular DJ UmeK’s new project, “Not Incompatible,” isn’t structured around traditional subplots, but rather centers on the conversations and relationships between a group of musical colleagues. The series began with a recent recording session at the POPcast studio, bringing together these established artists to commemorate their 50th anniversary. Umek is planning a significant event to mark this milestone: a gathering at the Gospodarski razstavišče in Ljubljana on October 23, 2026, designed to unite these diverse musical influences.

The project’s title reflects this core concept. The initial participant was Jani Novak, formerly of the Laibach group. Novak, now operating as “skretničar,” alongside UmeK, revisited their early collaborations and the beginnings of their acquaintance.

Novak explained his shift into this role, describing it as “more of a function on the railway tracks, which drops the train,” clarifying that it’s distinct from his previous stage performances. He’s now involved in the visual and coordination aspects of projects from behind the scenes. This marks the first collaboration for jani and UmeK, signaling the start of a project focused on the connections between these influential figures.
