Ukrainian Official Renounces Polish Award, Returns Decorations in Reciprocal Action
Kyiv, Ukraine – Kirilo Budanov, head of the Ukrainian President’s cabinet, has announced his renunciation of the Golden Order of Merit awarded to him by the Republic of Poland last year. The decision follows a corresponding action by Polish President Karol Nawrocki. Budanov’s announcement, made via Telegram, stated the move was in response to Nawrocki’s prior decision.
In a reciprocal gesture, Budanov and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have also announced the return of Polish state decorations. President Zelensky described Nawrocki’s revocation of Budanov’s highest honor as “a gift to Moscow,” asserting that Russia would exploit the situation against both Ukraine and Poland. The Polish President Zelensky has also revoked Budanov’s highest state decoration.
Ambassador Grzegorz Bodnar described the return of the decoration as “a very painful and emotional decision,” while President Nawrocki’s action was described as “a very sad and emotional decision.”
The exchange highlights ongoing tensions between the two nations amid the ongoing conflict and underscores the significant symbolic weight attached to the awards. Both leaders emphasized the importance of solidarity in the face of external pressures.
