UI content labeling: it becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish between real and artificially created

The Artificial Intelligence Act aims to equip European citizens with the ability to readily distinguish between authentic and fabricated online content. The implementation of the Act will occur in stages. Effective immediately, companies are required to ensure that their artificial intelligence systems, including chatbots, explicitly notify users that they are operating as AI.

Furthermore, any image or text generated using artificial intelligence must carry a visible label indicating its synthetic origin. According to an unnamed EU official cited by the French press agency AFP, the proliferation of AI is making it increasingly challenging to differentiate between genuine and artificially created material. This technology presents a significant risk, as generative AI facilitates the creation and dissemination of false or misleading content to an unprecedented degree.

Consequently, the legislation seeks to establish transparency standards across the digital sphere. The core objective is to mitigate the potential for misinformation spread by ensuring accountability in the development and deployment of artificial intelligence tools. By mandating clear labeling and disclosure, the Act intends to maintain public trust and provide users with necessary safeguards when consuming digital content.

This regulatory framework addresses the growing concern over the indistinguishability of AI-generated material from human-created work.
