They did the dirty work: China has the backbone of the modern world in its hands

Young provided some data: in 2023, the United States received 162 new graduates in rare earth and processing engineering. China had 3,000 of them. In the last three decades, China has filed three times more patents in the field of rare earths than the United States.

And there they have now noticed the difference. “I think it’s the first American administration that really understands the importance of critical minerals and critical raw materials and therefore tries to act quickly to solve these vulnerabilities and shortages,” Young assessed. The West created a lot of trouble by practically handing over strategic parts of modern industry to China in the last decades.

“It’s not just a question of mining,” Peter Pudil, entrepreneur, investor, co-founder of investment company BPD Partners and president of the GLOBSEC US Found, points out.
