Police Discover Safe Containing Valuables in Former Prime Minister Zapatero’s Office

Madrid, Spain – According to a national court order, Spanish police discovered a safe containing jewelry and watches within the office of former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. Euronews reports that the items recovered included earrings, stud earrings, rings, bracelets, and several watches, some bearing engravings. Zapatero’s secretary stated that the jewelry was intended as part of her inheritance.

Alongside the valuables, authorities seized a collection of hard disks, folders, and documents pertaining to various companies, contracts, and invoices. Personal diaries spanning the period from 2019 to 2025 were also taken. Two employees reportedly offered to assist investigators with accessing electronic devices, providing potential passwords.

José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has denied ownership of the safe and its contents. He explained that the safe was utilized within the office for security purposes following a relocation to a rented apartment, as it served as his primary residence during that time. The investigation is ongoing, focusing on the origin of the items found within the safe.
