The success of the medicine: ‘Urban first said mum and took independent steps’

According to Damjan Osredkar, head of the clinical department for pediatric, adolescent and developmental neurology at the pediatric clinic, the clinical study administering gene therapy is progressing with several patients. The treatment schedule includes the urban patient, who received the therapy in December 2025, and another girl from Portugal, who underwent the procedure in early May of this year. A third child is scheduled to receive the treatment in September.

Osredkar reported that the procedure for the girl from Portugal proceeded without major complications, and her recovery has been rapid. Although she is currently at home and reportedly feeling well, she continues to attend the hospital for routine follow-up examinations. The department head noted that the girl is experiencing some minor issues related to the concomitant steroid therapy, which is mandated by the study protocol following the gene replacement therapy.

He clarified that these are anticipated to be transient problems. Overall, Osredkar stated that to date, no serious health complications have been observed in any of the children treated within the study. The ongoing monitoring underscores the commitment to tracking the outcomes of this advanced pediatric treatment.
