The Shrek movie will be released

The character of the donkey, a prominent companion to the titular ogre in the animated Shrek franchise, has been the subject of continued discussion regarding its cinematic potential. Eddie Murphy, who voiced the character, has indicated through interviews that the donkey merits its own dedicated film. The donkey played a key supporting role throughout the initial four installments of the Shrek series, spanning from 2001 to 2010.

The original voice cast for the main characters included Mike Myers as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona, and Antonio Banderas voicing the donkey. Murphy’s involvement has continued with subsequent projects. Following a donkey film released in 2011 featuring Antonio Banderas, the character appeared again in The Donkey: The Last Wish in 2022.

Despite the recent focus on the donkey, the broader Shrek universe remains active. DreamWorks Animation has confirmed the development of a fifth Shrek film, scheduled for release in June 2027. This upcoming production signals a continuation of the franchise, ensuring that fans of the Shrek characters will have new cinematic content available.

The franchise history continues to build upon the popularity of its core cast members.
